Building upon the foundational knowledge from Music AMSTUD 18A, this course offers a deeper analysis of jazz as an evolving art form. Students will study more complex musical structures, performance practices, and the socio-political contexts that influenced the development of post-bop, modal jazz, free jazz, fusion, and contemporary styles. Special attention will be paid to under-represented voices in jazz history, including women and international jazz artists. Students will engage in critical listening and analytical writing-based assignments. Prerequisites: AMSTUD 18A or equivalent musical experience. Musical terminology and concepts will be freely used. Students should possess sufficient listening skills to identify the basic elements of music by ear.
