Tectonics Field Trip (EPS 189, EPS 289, GEOPHYS 108)

What does an earthquake fault look like near Earth's surface? How about the inside of, or beneath, a volcano? Why does California experience earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? Learn about thermo-physico-chemical evolution (mass transport, heat transport) in Earth's crust through an exciting four day field trip (one night motel, three nights camping, all equipment provided) on Memorial Day Weekend (late afternoon Thursday 5/GEOPHYS 21 - late evening Mon 5/GEOPHYS 25) to northern California/southern Oregon, including Crater Lake, Lassen and Lava Tubes National Parks/Monument. May be repeated for credit (future destinations span Sierra Nevada, to Owens Valley, Mono Lake, Yosemite, western Basin & Range Province; San Andreas fault; Mendocino Triple Junction). Lectures provide context for planned trip. Minimum pre-req for non-majors: EPS 1 (co-registration acceptable; previously GEOLSCI1) or GEOPHYS GEOPHYS 110 or equivalent). Last meeting Thursday May 21st (and field trip). Enrollment priority: majors,minors and graduate students in GEOPHYS and EPS, then SDSS.
