The role of language in constructing gender and sexuality. Historical overview of major theoretical perspectives and debates (difference vs. dominance, identity vs. desire) and discussion of new directions (affect, embodiment, figures of personhood, experimental approaches). Previous coursework in sociolinguistics recommended. Prerequisites: LING 250 and LINGUIST 110 or the equivalent.
