Pragmatic Skills for Mixed Methods Community Research (CHPR 247)

Exposure to common pitfalls and hands-on skills development for mixed methods research (integration of quantitative and qualitative research methods) via high-yield readings, problem sets requiring critical thinking, and small-group activities. Addresses five research stages (study design, sampling, question development, data collection, analysis, and write-up) for both quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (interviews and focus groups) methods. Key topics: mixed methods study designs; application to community-based participatory research; survey psychometrics; statistical power; effective qualitative questions; techniques for moderating focus groups; qualitative coding; mixed methods tables and figures; and collaborative dissemination. Graduate and undergraduate students from disciplines outside of health are encouraged to enroll.
