Cardiology Clerkship

VISITING: Closed to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Selective 1. DESCRIPTION: Exposes the students to all areas of clinical cardiology. Students participate in four half-day ambulatory care cardiology clinics on Tuesdays, perform at least 3-5 new consultations per week, with each consultation being presented to an attending physician and having a consultation note written. Additionally, each student 'rounds' five days a week on patients on the consultation service. Students read electrocardiograms almost daily. Their physical examinations are reviewed by the attending physician and/or cardiology fellow. They are exposed to all areas of clinical cardiologic testing: exercise treadmill/stress testing, radionuclide testing (thallium scans and radionuclide ejection fractions), cardiac ultrasound studies, cardiac catheterization and percutaneous transluminal coronary intervention (PTCI). Students follow each of their patients through these tests. When surgery or catheterization is required, they may observe the procedure in the operating room or the cath lab. Students participate in daily didactic sessions covering all areas of basic cardiology. Each student also has the opportunity to participate in any other ongoing medical or surgical teaching conferences as time permits. PREREQUISITES: None.
