This course explores the role of culture, ethnicity, and structural inequities in shaping health and the practice of medicine. Through weekly themes, guest speakers, storytelling, and guided reflection, students will examine how healthcare systems intersect with individual and community identity. The course centers marginalized voices in medicine, including healthcare providers and public health advocates from diverse backgrounds.Students will engage in personal reflection, narrative practice, and discussion to better understand cultural humility, structural competence, and the skills needed to serve diverse populations. Designed to be welcoming to students of all academic backgrounds, this course creates a space for authenticity, connection, and imagining inclusive futures in healthcare. Must be taken for 3 units to satisfy WAYS.
