Earth System Perspectives I

This is an introductory graduate-level course that is intended to provide an overview of leading-edge research topics in Earth System Science. Together with ESS 306 (Earth System Perspectives II), this course introduces the range of research into how the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, biosphere, land surface, biogeochemical cycles and human activities interact to shape the environments in which people and ecosystems live. Topics may include climate change, food security, water resources, ocean health, land use change, biodiversity and environmental risks. The emphasis is on providing an initial introduction to the process by which researchers pose questions and analyze and interpret results. Typically, the first half of each class is reserved for faculty presentations and Q&A, and the second half for student discussion. Graduate standing is required.
