Earth System Perspectives II

A graduate-level, seminar-style course that introduces Earth System Science (ESS) faculty and their research by placing them in the context of broader sustainability challenges across multiple scales. Topics discussed in the course include: Earth System History, Global Ecology, People & Environment, and Land & Water. In addition, students have opportunities for professional development and cohort building. There will be opportunities for students to share their personal background, motivation, and research interests with peers and to improve presentation and communication skills. There will be discussions on non-research career pathways, engagement with social and traditional media, and science-art communication. Emphasis is placed on effectively communicating relevance of the research to a wider audience. Typically, the first half of each class is reserved for faculty presentations and Q&A, the second half for student presentations or group activities. This course is a required course for and restricted to ESS graduate students.
