OSPBER 10

21st Century Perspectives on Immigration and Integration in Germany

UNITS:3
GRADING:Letter (ABCD/NP)
LEVEL:Undergrad
GER:—

In this course, we will explore the last OSPBER 75 years of immigration history in Germany, centering on the contemporary situation of migration and settlement. We will examine how both legal and cultural borders to belonging become instated, and how this relates not only to systems of governance in Germany but also in Europe as a whole. Some of the key moments that we will examine are the refugee migration of 2015, the Ukrainian refugee migration more recently, as well as the reformation this year of German citizenship law. In the background of this course will be an exploration of how multicultural inclusion and belonging is understood and also delimited by (imaginings of) the German nation, at the same time looking at changes in such understandings of belonging over time.
